Georgia to Become OGP Chair

On September 19, 2017, at the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly, the official meeting of the Open Government Partnership’s (OGP) Steering Committee will be held. Within the framework of the meeting, Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the Prime Minister of Georgia, will officially take over chairmanship of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) from Emmanuel Macron, the President of France. Furthermore, the Prime Minister of Georgia will present Georgia’s vision on the chairmanship of the Partnership to the OGP member states.

Promoting SDGs in Gori

IDFI hosted a meeting on the 2030 UN sustainable development agenda at the Gori Civic Engagement Center. IDFI representative Saba Buadze presented the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their component objectives. The meeting was attended by representatives of Gori, Kaspi, Kareli and Khashuri municipalities.

On August 2, 2017, the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) organized a meeting of  the Permanent Parliamentary Council on Open and Transparent Governance and its Consultative Group.  The aim of the meeting was to define and approve new dates for implementation of commitments under the Open Parliament Georgia Action Plan 2017-2018.

Court Directs Ministry of Internal Affairs to Retract Information Defaming Giorgi Kldiashvili

On December 12, 2014, the Director of IDFI Giorgi Kldiashvili was arrested by the Department of Central Criminal Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Georgia, on charges of illicit carrying of firearms (Art. 236.2 of the Criminal Code) and was taken to a pre-detention cell where he was kept for three days. On December 14, Giorgi Kldiashvili was released from the courtroom on bail, and his detention was declared illegal.

Assessment of Citizen Engagement Practices in the Municipalities of Batumi, Kutaisi and Akhaltsikhe

The challenges of the municipalities are largely similar and require systemic improvement. Several types of problems were identified in the assessed municipalities – 1. Insufficient skills of the public to engage policy dialogue; 2. Insufficient political will of the local government to consider input of the public; 3. Low capacity of civil servants involved in the public engagement process; 4. Fragmented legal framework on public participation; 5. Absence of innovation in the process of informing and consulting the public.
