The Parliament of Georgia is reviewing the draft law on Amendments to the Law on Information Security.
Since the launch of the Georgian Government’s e-petition platform (ICHANGE.GOV.GE), for the first time in two years a petition has garnered sufficient number of signatures, which obligates the Government to review it and respond to its signees.
Freedom of expression is a mandatory precondition for the establishment of a democratic State. Self-actualization of individuals and the development of society becomes impossible without the freedom of expression. Given the role and importance of the freedom of expression in the rule of law, there is a need of creating a legislative framework that allows free exchange of opinions and information.
The Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) continues to hold trainings for journalists and activists. On August 2, 2019, IDFI team visited Batumi and conducted a training for 22 journalists and activists from the Autonomous Republic of Adjara.
The improvements in data accessibility and technology allowed journalists to dive deeper into certain topics, and use various applications and programs to better process, analyze and present immense amounts of material. However, these new possibilities come with additional challenges related to skills and time required for the collection and processing of data.
On 3-4 July 2019, IDFI held a training in Kvareli for east Georgia media (16 participants; print, online and broadcasting) representatives working on data analysis. The training titled - Working on Open Data for Effective Monitoring of Government Accountability - is part of a series of trainings organized by IDFI as part of the project on Empowering Watchdog Community for Government Accountability.
In June 2019,theInstitute for Development of Freedom of Information [IDFI] with the support of the global philanthropic organization Luminate held two practical trainings for over 30 journalists and activists about the methods and mechanisms of government oversight.
