The Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) is a non-governmental organization that strives for an empowered and inclusive society. We promote human rights and good governance by raising civic awareness through sound informational reports, research, and recommendations; we advocate reforms, policies, laws, and practices to enhance democratic governance.

The Economic and Social Policy team specializes in running research programs for big-name international donor organizations and is seeking an Economist Intern. We conduct customized research involving economic impact, workforce/education analysis, economic analysis of national policy topics/issues. Our original research is shared via reports and presentations with various audiences including the government, non-governmental organizations and business associations. As an intern, you would have the opportunity to work closely with economists and senior managers and become heavily involved in the research and reporting process.

IDFI seeks talented and well-qualified students who thrive on learning new skills and are not afraid to tackle big projects. As an intern you will get to work with a variety of our staff, while working on real projects that will help us grow. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic, energetic, and interested in applying their academic skillset to our research.

What You Will Learn:

- Project Management – You will help us track project milestones, and have the opportunity to build relationships with clients and colleagues, seeing projects grow from inception to publication.

- Research – We conduct rigorous research that includes data compilation and organization, model development, and expansive reviews of secondary sources. You would be involved in each phase of this process, providing you with valuable insight.

- Writing – Our research results in the development of reports, corporate and public presentations, interactive models/tools and other deliverables. You will have the opportunity to work with our economists as we craft reports, presentations and other deliverables. We are always seeking new and inventive ways to visualize data and contextualize findings. You will have the freedom to experiment with presentation and descriptions of complex ideas in a manner that can be easily consumed by non-economists.

What We Require:

- Passion for changing things for the better, defying mouldy perceptions and the stuffy status quo.

- Background in Economics, Statistics, Math or a related field.

- Proficient in Microsoft Suite Office (particularly Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).

- Proficient in some or all of this statistical software (R, SAS, Stata, Python, Eviews).

- Detail-oriented and able to tackle large projects.

- Willingness to be collaborative and creative, and to think critically.

- Minimum of one year of formal or informal research experience.

We value all of our interns and go the extra mile to make sure you receive a learning experience that fits your career goals. We will work with you to develop a long-term project that spans the length of the internship and will allow you to shadow economists and technical experts throughout all stages of the project process. You will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have ample opportunity to network within our company.
