On June 25, with using Zoom platform, first meeting of the Consultative Group of the Open Governance Council of the Supreme Council of Ajara (SCA) Autonomous Republic was held. In the introductory part of the meeting, Giorgi Kldiashvili, Director of the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) and the Member of OGP Steering Committee, addressed the members of the Consultative Group and shared the experience on implementing the OGP principles in Georgia
In 2020, Georgia will hold parliamentary elections, which are usually marked by a large volume of political donations. As of June 3, 2020, the ruling party has already received more than GEL 4.7 million in donations.
Public involvement is crucial to be ensured for crime prevention as well as in the process of strengthening the police accountability and oversight of its activities. This, on the one hand, helps the system to become more effective and transparent and, on the other hand, increases public engagement as it helps the relevant entity and citizens to co-work on the establishment of community crime prevention mechanisms.
On June 22, 2020, the Committee on Legal Affairs of the Parliament of Georgia discussed draft law on amendments to the Law of Georgia on Information Security at the third hearing. Based on the proposal of the initiator of the bill, MP Irakli Sesiashvili, the Committee supported the issue of returning the draft law from the third hearing to the second hearing at a plenary sitting.
The existence of an independent and credible judiciary is important not only for rule of law and protection of human rights, but also for a country’s economic development. During almost 30 years since the declaration of Georgia’s independence, the country still has not managed to build an independent judiciary.
On June 21, the Parliament of Georgia passed the constitutional amendments in the first reading, with 136 MPs voting in favor and 5 against. We welcome this decision of the Parliament of Georgia, which was made possible with support of the ruling party, as well as opposition parties and majority of independent MPs.
The second meeting of the Open Governance Council of the Ajara Autonomous Republic Supreme Council(SCA) was held on June 22. The Open Governance Council discussed the statements of the organizations wishing to join the Consultative Group, established the Consultative Group and officially approved its composition.
The openness of archives is very important for studying history in different countries. However, this issue is more critical in the countries where archives can be used for the identification and rehabilitation of the victims of repressions.
By the end of May this year the Government of Georgia (GoG) published the draft report on Voluntary National Review (VNR) of Georgia 2020. VNR was finalized on June 12th, 2020 after which it was sent to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
Proactive disclosure of public information is one of the most significant commitments taken by Georgia within the framework of the Open Government Partnership (OGP).
