Investigation of Kortskheli Incident is Ineffective

NGOs issue the statement regarding Kortskheli incident. The undersigned organizations consider, the investigation of the incident in Kortskheli as ineffective and call on the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia to take adequate and timely steps in order to bring to justice all perpetrators and organizers of this violent act.

Coalition Reacts to the Delay of the Third Wave Judicial Reform

Coalition addresses the initiators of the Third Wave drafts and political factions in the Parliament with a demand to consider the crisis existing in the court system and take timely steps towards the fundamental reform of the justice system. In order to achieve this objective the Third Wave amendments have to be adopted and enacted on time. This will create a platform for the future reform, which will be more inclusive and open for substantive discussions.

The Coalition Calls for Action against Violation of Journalist Rights

The Coalition for Media Advocacy calls on law enforcement agencies in Zugdidi to conduct the investigation of the physical confrontation at the Kortskheli polling station and hold perpetrators responsible under Article 154 of the Criminal Code (interference with journalistic activity) as well.

Joint statement of NGOs regarding the “cable case”

On May 16, 2016, the Tbilisi City Court found five high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Defense guilty in the so-called “cable case” and sentenced them to seven years of imprisonment. At this stage, the substantiated judgment of the Court is not available, although the present statement is based the assessment of the circumstances and facts that were made public by the parties in the trial, as well as on the information obtained during the trials and that mentioned in open sources and reports.

Legislative Amendments on Constitutional Court Adopted by Parliament Threaten Democratic Development of Georgia

The Coalition for Independent and Transparent Judiciary issued a statement that expresses coalition members' deep concerns over the legislative amendments on Constitutional Court adopted by the Georgian Parliament. The Coalition believes that the actions of the legislative body are directed not only against the Constitutional Court bench or/and specific judges, but these actions intend to paralyze the work of the Constitutional Court and diminish its important role thereby jeopardizing the values of fundamental importance for a democratic state.

Coalition Statement on the Selection of Judicial Candidates for the Supreme Court

The Coalition provides an opinion on the process as a result of which the President of Georgia presented several candidates to fill the Supreme Court’s vacant seats. According to current legislation, President is authorized to present any candidate which meets the criteria provided in law to the Parliament. The legislation has no particular selection procedure for candidates.
