Working Meeting of IDFI, Social Justice Center and the State Inspector's Service with Media Representatives

On June 24-25, 2021, in cooperation with the State Inspector's Service, the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) and the Social Justice Center held a working meeting with media representatives. 

 

The State Inspector - Londa Toloraia, Executive Director of the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information - Giorgi Kldiashvili and Tamar Gvasalia - Project Coordinator of the Social Justice Center, addressed the participants with welcoming speeches.

 

Media representatives shared their expectations for the working meeting with the participants, after that, the Deputy State Inspector - Sophio Jiadze spoke about the functions of the State Inspector's Service, the achievements of the Service in the field of personal data protection and the existing challenges.

 

The second session was dedicated to the investigative activities of the State Inspector's Service, where the First Deputy State Inspector - Giorgi Gamezardashvili focused on the accomplishments, gained experiences and obstacles in the field of investigation. The speaker highlighted the problems that investigators from the State Inspector's Service have in the process of timely receiving notifications of cases under the investigative jurisdiction of the Service, conducting investigations quickly and efficiently, and obtaining evidence.

 

Representatives of IDFI and the Social Justice Center introduced the main findings of the study "Independent Investigative Mechanism in Georgia - Achievements and Existing Challenges", which is scheduled for public presentation on July 12, 2021. This joint study by IDFI and the Social Justice Center is the first document that comprehensively reviews the activities of the Independent Investigative Mechanism and focuses on measures to be taken to strengthen the institutional capacity and increase the degree of independence of the Service.

 

After the speakers’ presentation, a discussion was held with the active involvement of media representatives, during which the participants discussed future plans for cooperation in raising public awareness about the activities of the State Inspector's Service.

 

The event was organized within the framework of the project  “Supporting the Functioning of the State Inspector Service” which is implemented by the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) in cooperation with the Social Justice Center with the support of the Open Society Georgia Foundation (OSGF).
