On September 25, 2015, on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the UN General Assembly approved its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The document consists of 17 goals and 169 targets that balance all three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental. The agenda is aimed at achieving prosperity, peace and cooperation, all of which are critically important for the planet and humanity.

The goals and targets described in the document are consistent with the objectives of the Open Government Partnership (OGP). Therefore, OGP serves as an effective way of implementing the sustainable development goals.

On September 27, two days after the adoption of the sustainable development goals by the UN General Assembly, 11 member states of the OGP Steering Committee adopted the Joint Declaration on Open Government for the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The declaration welcomes the contents of the Agenda and its recognition of the principles of transparency and open government as crucial tools for ensuring the effective implementation of sustainable development goals. According to the declaration, the Open Government Partnership declares its commitment to:

1. Promote the rule of law consistent with international standards at the national, regional and international level through transparency, openness and accountability.
2. Promote access to public information.
3. Support citizen participation in the implementation of sustainable development goals.
4. Uphold the principles of open government when measuring the implementation of sustainable development goals.
5. Use OGP National Action Plans to promote the implementation of sustainable development goals.

The Georgian Parliament through its Permanent Council on Open and Transparent Governance is the first Parliament worldwide to have joined the OGP Declaration on Open Government for the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The UN 2030 Agenda is an ambitious document, the implementation of which will require multilateral engagement and collaboration. By joining the OGP Declaration the Permanent Parliamentary Council on Open and Transparent Governance has taken the commitment to support the implementation of UN sustainable development goals by incorporating them in the Open Parliament Action Plan.

The Georgian Parliament is currently implementing the Open Parliament Georgia Action Plan for 2015-2016. The action plan commitments will need to be fulfilled by December 2016.

The action plan implementation by the Parliament is supported by the project - Supporting the Parliament of Georgia in Implementation of the Open Parliament Georgia Action Plan, which is implemented by IDFI with funding from UNDP and EU. IDFI acts as a coordinator between the Parliamentary Council and the Consultative Group.
