On January 21, 2016, IDFI requested information on state awards (orders and medals) issued by Georgian Presidents in 2003-2015 from the President’s Administration. During this period, the largest number of state wards was issued during the last years of Mikheil Saakashvili’s presidency. IDFI was also able to obtain the complete list of individuals that received state wards in 2003-2015.
The data published by IDFI attracted strong interest from the media. Maestro TV news program Contact prepared a segment on the story featuring an interview with IDFI analyst Giorgi Tushurashvili, who spoke about the main findings of his research, including the identities of recipients who may have not deserved their state awards.
Kavkasia TV news program reviewed the IDFI’s research, its main findings and the list of state award recipients in 2003-2015. The segment featured an interview with IDFI director Giorgi Kldiashvili who spoke about certain individuals, later convicted for criminal offenses, undeservedly receiving Orders of Vakhtang Gorgasali.
Print media also reported the story. Newspapers Versia and Messenger published the articles containing statistics on state awards based on IDFI’s data. The Newspaper Asaval-Dasavali suggests the interpreted version of IDFI's research.
