One of the directions of IDFI work is providing the access to the archival documents. Based on various sources, researchers conduct exhibitions, collect photo and documentary materials, as well as oral histories, publish studies and publications.

Accessibility of the state archives for the researchers and other stakeholders plays decisive role in analyzing the past legacy. Thus, IDFI had appealed to the Ministry of Justice in February of 2013 to revise the fees of LEPL “National Archives of Georgia” service as well as rules and dates and abolish the fee charged for accessing the archival document.

IDFI was notified from the Ministry that changes in regards of providing the service for the researches are already planned. According to the letter received on April 22, Ministry planed to adopt the amendments in nearest future. In particular, LEPL National Archives of Georgia was supposed to present the amendments of the decree no. 506 of December 29, 2011 of Government of Georgia to the Ministry of Justice by May 1, 2013. The amendments concerned the issue of letting the researchers use the archival documents as well as digitalized versions of these documents free of charge.

Furthermore, in 2013 IDFI was involved in project “Past Heritage of the New State”, within the frames of which project team analyzed the most important events of the new history of Georgia (1989-1991).

With the aims of making the society familiar with these issues, IDFI had organized the exhibition – unique documents and photo materials on repressions of 1937-38m depicting the tragic events taking place in Georgia. These documents had been obtained from the archives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the personal archives of the descendants of the victims of repressions. Furthermore, connected to these issues, IDFI had organized symbolic demonstration on the anniversary of Stalin in order to honor the victims of the repressions of 1937-38.

Signing the agreement of cooperation with the Institute of National Remembrance - Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation (IPN) had huge importance. Both sides agreed upon cooperating in the following issues: creating the list of victims of Communist regime, exchanging the bibliographical information, defining the mass execution sites, implementing archival researches on totalitarianism and Stalinism.
