Media Freedom and Captured Institutions in Georgia - Side Event within the OSCE Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting

News | Rule of Law, Human Rights and Freedom of Media 20 March 2025

On March 18, 2025, a side event was held within the OSCE Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting framework, featuring representatives from IDFI, GYLA, and Rights Georgia.

During the meeting, speakers discussed the alarming situation regarding media freedom in Georgia, the forms of systemic repression used by the "Georgian Dream" against critical media, and circumstances that reveal the scale of state capture.

Special attention was paid to the non-investigation of crimes committed against media representatives and the facilitation of impunity for violent actions. At the same time, it was emphasized that there is no state institution at the national level taking meaningful steps to protect the rights of individuals targeted by systemic repression.

The event was moderated by Dave Elseroad, Head of Advocacy and Geneva Office at the Human Rights House Foundation.
