Venice Commission Published its Opinion on New Provision on Prosecutorial Council

European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) has published its opinion on the new provisions on the prosecutorial council in the draft organic law on the Prosecutor’s Office. The opinion briefly assessed the provisions in the draft law that were prepared for the purposes of harmonizing the law on Prosecutor’s Office with the new edition of the Constitution.

Knowledge and Attitudes of the Population of Georgia towards Judiciary: Results of the Public Opinion Survey

Within the framework of the EU-funded project – “Facilitating Implementation of Reforms in the Judiciary (FAIR)”has been implementing by Human Rights Education and Monitoring Center (EMC) in cooperation with the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) and Caucasus Research Resource Centers (CRRC), CRRC-Georgia presented the results of the Public Opinion Survey, which was carried out between 30 August and 15 September, culminating into 2080 completed interviews.

IDFI Organized a Training on Discrimination on the Grounds of Gender and Sex for Prosecutors and Investigators of Prosecution Service

Prosecutors and investigators from various territorial authorities of the Prosecution Service of Georgia participated in the training on gender discrimination and sexual harassment. The event was organized by IDFI with the support from the European Union, in cooperation with the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia.

The Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) presented the opinion on the draft organic law on Prosecutor’s Office to the Parliament of Georgia. Draft organic law and related draft legislative acts were registered in the Parliament on September 20, 2018.

Murder on Khorava Street: Public Knowledge and Attitudes towards Court Decision

In early December 2017, two schoolchildren were killed on Khorava Street in Tbilisi. On May 31^st, 2018, Tbilisi City Court announced the decision on the Khorava Street murder case. The announcement caused mass demonstrations led by Zaza Saralidze, a father of one of the murdered children.

Within the framework of monitoring conducted by IDFI in 2010-2017 a total of45 310Freedom of Information (FOI) requests were sent to public institutions, and 37 511 replies were received.

In 2017-2018 the Rule of Law Situation in Georgia has Worsened in Georgia

The goal of the comparative analysis prepared by IDFI is to review the results of Georgia from 2012 to-date based on the data provided by the World Justice Project, ascertain progress or lack thereof in certain directions and compare the result of Georgia to Eastern European and Central Asian countries.

The Constitutional Court did not Disclose Information about the Judge's Disciplinary Proceedings

On July 31, 2017, IDFI applied to the Constitutional Court to issue public information. In particular, IDFI requested to receive a copy of conclusion of the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission of Constitutional Court concerning the disciplinary proceedings against the judge Merab Turava launched on September 6, 2015. On September 25, 2017, our organization also applied to the Constitutional Court and requested information whether there were ongoing disciplinary cases against judges, which had not yet been decided.
