Public Defender Recommends Ministry of Justice to Cease Violating IDFI’s Rights

On January 31st, 2017, the Public Defender of Georgia held that the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) and 11 legal entities of public law (LEPL) operating within its system violated the right of N(N)LE Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI). According to the Public Defender, the state entities failed to fulfil their legal obligation to disclose public information.

OGP - Global Summits and Georgia's Achievements

On May 4, 2016, Georgia was elected co-chair of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) after serving as a member of the OGP Steering Committee since August 2013. As the co-chair, starting October 1, Georgia will head the Steering Committee together with its current chair – France. The following year, Georgia will itself take over as the OGP chair country and take an active part in developing OGP’s main directions and strategies.

Georgia in the 2017 Doing Business Index

According to the Doing Business 2017 report, Georgia is ranked 16th among 190 nations. In the previous year’s report (2016), Georgia held the 24th position among 189 countriesGeorgia has improved its positions in many categories, particularly in terms of institutional structure and regulatory environment. However, major weaknesses remain, such as lack of support for research and education by the government and the private sector, and limited use of innovation in business.

The Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) Files a Constitutional Complaint

Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) has filed a constitutional complaint to the Constitutional Court. IDFI believes that the existing regulation of access to court decisions contradict the Constitution of Georgia.

Tbilisi Government Adopted Tbilisi Action Plan 2017 Within the Framework of “Open Government Partnership”

On November 16, 2017, the Government of Tbilisi adopted Tbilisi OGP Action Plan 2017. In May 2016 the working group for development, promotion and monitoring of implementation of the Action Plan within the framework of “Open Government Partnership” was created. The working group is composed of representatives from various NGOs and international programs, including: OSGF, IDFI, “Transparency International Georgia, USAID Program on “Good Governance Initiative in Georgia” and “Delegation of the European Union to Georgia” program.
