On January 18, 2022, IDFI contacted the National Statistics Office and the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) for information on mortality rate statistics in 2021 - by sex, age, and cause of death. According to the National Statistics Office, the data is still being processed and will be published at the end of Jun, 2022. According to the Center for Disease Control, officially updated mortality rate data of 2021 is not currently available. However, the NCDC provided IDFI with preliminary data.

According to preliminary data provided by the NCDC, mortality rate in Georgiareached 59,638 in 2021, which is 9,101 (+18%) higher than the revised figure for 2020.

The annual mortality ratein the country from 1994 to 2020 ranged from 46 thousand to 51 thousand, therefore, 2021 has seen the highest mortality rate in the past 28 years - 59,638.

Such a sharp increase in the mortality rate can be attributed to the coronavirus pandemic (according to official data, 11,298 persons have died of coronavirus in 2021).

The updated statistics for 2021, disaggregated by cause of death, will be published by the National Statistics Office in June 2022.
