In disinformation studies direction, IDFI has been extending its scope of acting as well as its international network. In this context, Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information(IDFI) and Transitions Online (TOL) on July 8, 2021. The Memorandum aims at imporoving a collaborative work for increasing trust in quality journalism as one of the most important ways to fight against disinformation and propaganda as well as for training different segments of the society in fact-checking and reporting on disinformation.
Transitions Online is a non-governmental nonprofit organization in Czech Republic, which has been dedicated to furthering media freedom and raising journalistic standards in the post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the former Soviet Union since 1999. In pursuit of its mission, TOL undertakes the inter-related activities of online publishing and journalism training.
IDFI and TOL agree upon the fundamental principles in the milieu of debunking effects of disinformation. Hence, the collaborative trainings for journalists as well as other vulnerable segments of society (e.g. elderly) will be planned together with the coordinated attempts to contribute to the academic inquiry of the subjects of disinformation and hybrid warfare.
IDFI and TOL also envision partnering within the analytical work and research collaboration, including, but not limited to, cross-national analytical pieces on the subject of disinformation. This might include issues related to disinformation, quality journalism, research and advocacy.
TOL’s journalist training activities encompass a variety of techniques and topics, including online and workshop-based instruction on subjects as diverse as investigative journalism, war crimes reporting, coverage of the arts, health policy reporting, reporting on minority affairs and training on debunking disinformation. Since 2017 Transitions has also successfully developed news literacy programs for journalism students, adults and seniors in the Czech Republic and V4 region with a special focus on promoting trust in good quality journalism and responsible reporting. Since 2015, Transitions has a rich experience designing and running online learning programs that include both live trainer-led workshops as well as standalone self-directed interactive courses, which demonstrates a special relevance in the current times.
