IDFI Delivered a Statement at the Pre-Session of the UN Universal Periodic Review

On December 8, 2020, the pre-session of the 3^rd cycle of the UN Universal Periodic Review was held in a virtual format where the representatives of non-governmental organizations and the public defender’s office informed the Permanent Missions to the UN about the human rights situation in Georgia. The delegates also heard specific recommendations that are advisable to be received by Georgia from the representatives of respective countries.

IDFI’s Head of Rule of Law and Human Rights Direction – Ketevan Kukava delivered a statement at the Pre-Session and highlighted the issues related to the administration of justice/fair trial and freedom of expression/access to information in Georgia. Ketevan Kukava also suggested specific recommendations that are necessary to be taken into account to eradicate existing shortcomings.

“Independence of the judiciary, as well as strong guarantees of freedom of expression and access to information, are necessary preconditions for the democratic development of a state. Therefore, continuing and consolidating reforms in this direction is essential for ensuring human-rights based policy and strengthening the rule of law in Georgia”- stated Ketevan Kukava.

Universal Periodic Review established by the UN Human Rights Council is an important mechanism aimed at improving the human rights situation in all member states. Within the scope of this mechanism, the human rights situation in all member states is assessed every 4-5 years and relevant recommendations are made.

On January 26, 2021, within the scope of the Universal Periodic Review, the human rights situation in Georgia will be assessed at the UN for the third time. In addition to other sources, the review will be based on information provided by and indicated in the reports of non-governmental organizations. The UN member states will make recommendations regarding various human rights issues.
