One of the areas of activities of IDFI is ensuring openness of state archives and access to documentary materials. Researches of the institute organize exhibitions based on archival and other sources, collect photo and documentary materials, record verbal stories and publish researches. In scope of these activities the Institute cooperates with Ministry of Internal Affairs, National Archive of Georgia, as well as with leading research institutes and scientific organizations of the world. 

 

We strongly believe that knowledgeable choice of the future generations can only be achieved through objective study and rethinking of the past. By conducting archival and scientific researches IDFI team aims at supporting development of democratic state and active civil society through studying the past.

IDFI Partner Discusses Open Archives in Belarus

On February 4, 2019, a briefingand discussion for journalists was held at the Belarusian Documentation Centre at which the openness of state archives and the publicity of data about repressed people were discussed. The initiator and organizer of the event was the researcher of the Belarusian Documentation Centre and the partner of the project “Enhancing Openness of State Archives in the Former Soviet and Eastern Bloc Countries” by the Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI), Dmitry Drozd.

Mass Graves of Victims of Soviet Repression in Georgia

Identification of burials and remains of the victims of the Soviet-era terror is a demanding challenge for the post-Soviet countries. Many of these countries have started searching for such burial sites not at all recently, several mass burial sites have already been found and these countries have paid tribute to the repressed. There was no such precedent in Georgia as of yet, the search for burial sites and graves in the 1990s were largely in vain due to the destruction of archives and lack of information.
